Power, Peace and Joy

2 Chronicles 23:16-21 :

Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, all the people, and the king, that they should be Yahweh’s people. All the people went to the house of Baal, broke it down, broke his altars and his images in pieces, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. Jehoiada appointed the officers of Yahweh’s house under the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in Yahweh’s house, to offer the burnt offerings of Yahweh, as it is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as David had ordered. He set the gatekeepers at the gates of Yahweh’s house, that no one who was unclean in anything should enter in. He took the captains of hundreds, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought the king down from Yahweh’s house. They came through the upper gate to the king’s house, and set the king on the throne of the kingdom. So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet. They had slain Athaliah with the sword.

In this passage, we read how Jehoiada made a new covenant with God that all the people, the king, and he himself, would serve Yahweh. They destroyed Baal's "church" and priest and after setting up the king on his throne in the palace, "all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet." There are some good insights we can gain from this passage.

One thing we see, is how a good leader deals with power. Jehoiada could have made himself supreme ruler over all Israel at this point. The people might have even liked it. Instead, Jehoida put himself under God's authority and God's king with a covenant. It was God and His law that Jehoiada chose to submit to. This is what real leaders do. It may have looked like Jehoiada was a power-hungry revolutionary when he was organizing the troops, but we see, in the end, that it was his position under God that ultimately ruled his actions. Jehoiada was also carefull to follow David's instructions. He listened to the advice of the good king David, the one that God blessed, instead of trying to use his own ideas.

Another thing we read here is that the people were happy and peaceful because Athaliah was dead. One sign that God gives every man about the state of his life, is the sign of peace. When we are at peace with God, even when things are not going well in the world, we have a deep peace in our hearts. There is a joy and a quietness that our soul longs for that only the righteousness of the One True God can bring.
