Jehoiada Makes a Move

2 Chronicles 23:1-7 :

In the seventh year, Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the captains of hundreds, Azariah the son of Jeroham, Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, Azariah the son of Obed, Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, into a covenant with him. They went around in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the heads of fathers’ households of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. All the assembly made a covenant with the king in God’s house. He said to them, “Behold, the king’s son must reign, as Yahweh has spoken concerning the sons of David. This is the thing that you must do. A third part of you, who come in on the Sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be gatekeepers of the thresholds. A third part shall be at the king’s house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation. All the people will be in the courts of Yahweh’s house. But let no one come into Yahweh’s house, except the priests and those who minister of the Levites. They shall come in, for they are holy, but all the people shall follow Yahweh’s instructions. The Levites shall surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand. Whoever comes into the house, let him be slain. Be with the king when he comes in, and when he goes out.”

Sometimes, a leader decides to enforce laws that go against the will of God. Here's a case where a wicked woman took power in Israel without God's approval. She made it worse by attacking and killing those that God said were supposed to be in charge. What she was making Israel do was evil and something had to be done about it.

One of the things that God clearly defined in the Bible was that Levites were to protect God's holy things. Moses commanded that they were to kill anyone who came close to these things. Perhaps it was these rule that inspired Jehoiada to take this action against Athaliah. The real king of Israel was growing up in the temple while a wicked queen was causing God's wrath to increase against the land. Jehoiada quietly called the Levites together and laid out plans for how they would protect God's chosen one, and prepare to put him into power. These men were acting in direct violation of the government of the queen, but in reality, they were protecting the land from the wrath of God and helping to save all of mankind. It is interesting that the government trouble brought the Levites together as well. God has a way of using these hard times to do beautiful things in our lives. Even so, allowing evil to go on is wrong. We are never to obey any authority that tells us to do something that God says is wrong. They have over-stepped their authority and it is very likely that God has already prepared someone like Jehoiada who is in the process of removing them from power. It is important that we remain true to God, even when the government goes bad.
