A Total Loss

2 Chronicles 21:16-20 :

Yahweh stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians who are beside the Ethiopians; and they came up against Judah, broke into it, and carried away all the possessions that were found in the king’s house, including his sons and his wives; so that there was no son left him, except Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.

After all this Yahweh struck him in his bowels with an incurable disease. In process of time, at the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness, and he died of severe diseases. His people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers. He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He departed without being missed; and they buried him in David’s city, but not in the tombs of the kings.

This is one of the most tragic stories about a king in Israel. We read here that God actually caused the Philistines and the Arabians to want to attack Judah. When they did, they robbed the king's house, including all of his children, except for one. God reserved one of them, and that's all he needed to carry on Jesus' family line. This was a horrible thing for Jehoram, but his death was horrible too as he suffered for two years with an intestinal disease. This man who tried to protect his own kingdom by killing his brothers, ended up having his family, health and life taken away by God. God also took all his respect away. After he died, no one gave him a celebration. The Bible tells us that he wasn't even misssed.

There is no mention of any attempt by Jehoram to repent and turn back to God even though he severely suffered for two years. This demonstrates how corrupt we can become if we fail to listen to God when our ears are still able to hear Him. When we hear God's call, we must answer Him and turn from our sin. When God turns His back on a man, there is no hope left for him.

I want to make a note about something that we learn from Luke in the New Testament. In the record of the events of Jesus death, Luke carefully records that when Judas, the one who betrayed Jesus, died, his intestines came out. It is very likely that the Jewish audience would connect that, with this record. Both Jehoram and Judas were cursed by God because of what they chose to do.

Proverbs 11:7 :

When a wicked man dies, hope perishes,
and expectation of power comes to nothing.
