A Blow to National Security

2 Chronicles 21:8-10 :

In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah, and made a king over themselves. Then Jehoram went there with his captains and all his chariots with him. He rose up by night and struck the Edomites who surrounded him, along with the captains of the chariots. So Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah to this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time from under his hand, because he had forsaken Yahweh, the God of his fathers.

Ironically, the man who went so far as to kill all of his brothers in order to preserve his kingdom, ended up losing a significant part of the kingdom when two family groups revolted against him and broke off their relations with Judah. This was a very bad thing for the country of Judah, but there are some comforting things that we take from this passage. Did you notice that the reason Libnah revolted against Jehoram was "because he had forsaken Yahweh, the God of his fathers." It was his lack of belief in God that proved to be a major threat to Judah's national security! We need to consider what that means for us today. No matter how unpopular Satan has caused Christianity to look, there are those who love Christian countries primarily because they are doing what the God of the Bible says.

Edom and Libnah's actions remind us to defend the biblical worldview in our nations today. No matter how unpopular it may seem, we must remember that the Bible clearly says that nations are respected because of their righteousness.

Proverbs 14:34 :

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

These events confirm the fact that the most basic part of peace and good economy in a nation, is the respect that a nation has for the God of the Bible. The Bible tells us that everyone knows something about God. He created everyone with some knowledge of Himself according to Romans 1. People know when God's rules are being violated to some extent, even without knowing the Bible. They can also tell when those rules are being kept. The goodness of a nation produces a natural attraction and when that goodness is gone, it does not go unrecognized.
