Joy in the Details

Nehemiah 11:19-36 :

Moreover the gatekeepers, Akkub, Talmon, and their brothers, who kept watch at the gates, were one hundred seventy-two. The residue of Israel, of the priests, the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, everyone in his inheritance. But the temple servants lived in Ophel: and Ziha and Gishpa were over the temple servants.

The overseer also of the Levites at Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Mica, of the sons of Asaph, the singers, over the business of God’s house. For there was a commandment from the king concerning them, and a settled provision for the singers, as every day required. Pethahiah the son of Meshezabel, of the children of Zerah the son of Judah, was at the king’s hand in all matters concerning the people.

As for the villages, with their fields, some of the children of Judah lived in Kiriath Arba and its towns, in Dibon and its towns, in Jekabzeel and its villages, in Jeshua, in Moladah, Beth Pelet, in Hazar Shual, in Beersheba and its towns, in Ziklag, in Meconah and in its towns, in En Rimmon, in Zorah, in Jarmuth, Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages, Lachish and its fields, and Azekah and its towns. So they encamped from Beersheba to the valley of Hinnom. The children of Benjamin also lived from Geba onward, at Michmash and Aija, and at Bethel and its towns, at Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah, Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim, Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat, Lod, and Ono, the valley of craftsmen. Of the Levites, certain divisions in Judah settled in Benjamin’s territory.

It is pretty obvious that God was behind Nehemiah and his work. I am told that the position of cupbearer for the king of Persia was almost like being a vice president. It is amazing how God worked in this man's heart, that he would leave his comfortable and lucrative position in Persia to go and deal with a huge number of details while being persecuted by people both inside and outside of Israel. When you simply read all of the names here, you get a feel for how much detail had to be worked through. Rebuilding a country and it's capital city is no small task.

Here we read where the settlers in Israel settled outside of the city of Jerusalem. We also read about the fact that the singers where specifically named by the king to be paid every day. It is good that Nehemiah was careful to follow every detail, but I wondered why the king would be so specific about this. Perhaps he had heard some of King David's original music. It could also be that the king knew that it would cheer up his cupbearer who had come into his court with such sadness. It's amazing how God takes care of small details in our lives that give us hope and joy. It's one more sign that He loves us more than we understand.
